ALABAMA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT: DEM Investigates Fish Kill on Black Warrior River

Alabama Department of Environmental Management issued the following announcement on Aug. 20.

- The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) is investigating a fish kill on the Black Warrior River near the Holt Lock and Dam in Tuscaloosa County.

ADEM received notification of the fish kill on Saturday, August 17, 2019 and responded immediately to the incident. Both ADEM and Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural

Resources collected samples in four different locations including: the area of the fish kill, one upstream, and two downstream. Early reports determine hundreds of dead shad were the only affected species.

Initial dissolved oxygen and pH levels were reported in the normal range during field measurements. The Department is also analyzing for nutrients, alkalinity, metals, and other water quality parameters which require laboratory analysis. Those results have not been determined at this time.

ADEM and ADCNR will continue the investigation.
