Competitive Enterprise Institute issued the following announcement on Oct. 25.
On Wednesday, the European Union put forward a proposal to ban ten single-use plastic items, including straws and cotton swabs, by 2021. The proposal is still subject approval by member states.
CEI Senior Fellow Angela Logomasini said:
“The proposed EU ban is simply an attack on consumer freedom that won't help the environment. While bans on plastic consumer items like bags, cups, straws, and whatever else may be great material for grandstanding by politicians, they only divert attention from developing real solutions that actually tackle the problem of plastic waste in our oceans. They also ignore the benefits of products in ensuring sanitary food service, convenience, and energy savings."
