Idaho readies auto salvage cleanup

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is asking for public comment regarding a draft plan for cleaning up the former Kelley’s Auto Salvage property in Heyburn, which remains contaminated with lead and petroleum chemicals, the department said recently.

The Voluntary Remediation Work Plan is meant as a guide describing how the proposed cleanup method will be undertaken.

The proposal involves targeted excavation of soil that has been contaminated and removal of an above ground storage tank and piles of debris. If all goes according to plan, the property will be open to redevelopment as a commercial site.

The draft work plan is available for review on the DEQ’s website, at its state office in Boise, at its Twin Falls office and at the Burley City Library.
