WVDEP creates weekly tire recycling program for Brooke County residents

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) recently announced that residents of the state’s Brooke County can now recycle tires on a weekly basis thanks to a program developed with the Brooke County Recycling Center.

Through its Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP) Pollution Prevention and Open Dump Program, the WVDEP offers single-day tire collection events throughout the state’s 55 counties, but the department hopes that weekly collection programs, like Brook County’s and a similar initiative in Hancock County, will prove more effective. The single-day events are not always well utilized, as residents are not always aware of them, so the WVDEP is looking to offer more frequent and regular opportunities for residents to dispose of their unwanted tires, as opposed to them ending up in landfills and streams.

The program will begin on March 25 and will run every Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the animal shelter on Route 2. Those looking to recycle their tires must bring proof of residency, and the program will only accept car, truck, motorcycle and lawn tractor tires. The program is for individuals, so businesses will not be permitted to drop off tires, and there is a limit of 10 tires at a time — though those with more than 10 tires to recycle can contact the REAP program.
