Washington Dept. of Ecology updating proposed Clean Air Rule

The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) recently withdrew its proposed Clean Air Rule, which it released in January to begin the process of capping and reducing the state’s carbon pollution, to update the regulation based on public feedback. 

"We appreciate all the helpful and constructive feedback we have received from stakeholders," Ecology Special Assistant on Climate Change Policy Sarah Rees said. "We're listening and being responsive to the ideas on how to best move the rule forward."

Ecology hopes to use the Clean Air Rule to combat climate change and its effects, especially on the Washington’s coastal communities, its agriculture industries and its drinking water sources. The department plans to release a new draft regulation this spring, which will clarify the rule’s compliance options, make the proposed credit system more transparent, and include measures to protect businesses that make products sensitive to global pricing.

"We'll continue the engagement process with the public and stakeholders while we make the updates," Rees said. "We're committed to keeping the conversation going; it's a priority for us."

The department plans to finalize the rule this summer, and will reschedule public hearings on the regulation once the new draft version is released.
