“National Enforcement Initiatives help us focus time and resources on national pollution problems that impact Americans locally,” EPA Assistant Administrator for Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Cynthia Giles said. “These initiatives were chosen so we can better protect communities, especially those overburdened by pollution, and were informed by extensive analysis and public input. We remain committed to a vigorous enforcement program that reduces pollution and protects public health.”
The EPA will maintain four of its initiatives from the previous cycle, including reducing air pollution from the largest sources, keeping energy extraction activities lawful and protecting the nation’s waters from raw sewage and contaminated stormwater and from animal waste. The agency is also expanding its initiative to reduce hazardous air pollutants by expanding its attentions to include large storage tanks and hazardous waste facilities. Finally, the EPA is adding two new initiatives, aimed at preventing industrial pollution in the nation’s waters and at reducing the risks of industrial and chemical facility accidental releases.
