Murphy applauds Obama’s inclusion of Land and Water Conservation Fund in budget request

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) recently applauded President Barack Obama for his 2017 budget request, especially his funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, an important resource for protecting public lands and waterways.

“Connecticut has been a leader in preserving open space because we understand what’s at stake,” Murphy said. “The President made a bold pitch to protect our planet for our kids and grandkids.”

In the President’s budget request, $900 million will go toward conservation and recreation projects, with an estimated $4 in local economic activity gained by every $1 spent through the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Murphy noted that the request includes fully funding the 36,000 acre Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, which is spread throughout Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts, with $5.3 million.

“Funding for the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge is particularly important, and the support is a real testament to the advocacy of Connecticut residents who understand the value of protecting this wildlife refuge and the habitats along the Connecticut River watershed,” Murphy said. “I will be fighting in the Appropriations Committee over the coming weeks to make sure we secure this investment.”
