Ohio EPA issues permit for New Springfield landfill expansion

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) recently approved a permit that allows expansion of New Springfield’s Mahoning Landfill Inc. by 51.6 acres, including lateral and vertical growth.

The Ohio EPA held a public hearing in Springfield in May to discuss the requested expansion, where it accepted public comments on the permit. The agency responded to these comments in a document that is available, along with the permit and all related materials, on the Ohio EPA’s website and at the agency’s Northeast District Office, in Twinsburg.

The landfill, located at 3510 Garfield Rd., will have an increased capacity of 24.11 million cubic yards and will be able to accept 4,000 tons of waste per day, an increase from its current allowance of 2,500.

The Ohio Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC) will accept appeals on the permit issuance. Appeals should be filed within 30 days of the Ohio EPA permit issuance.
