Idaho DEQ proposes changes to manual on subsurface sewage disposal systems

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) proposed changes to its manual on the design, construction and operation of subsurface sewage disposal systems this week, with updates developed around the latest public health standards.

The document, “Technical Guidance Manual for Individual and Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems (TGM),” is a valuable resource for both those looking to install such a sewage system and for local and state government representatives looking to evaluate them. Builders and wastewater system installers can use the TGM throughout the process of putting a subsurface sewage disposal system in place, ensuring that it is constructed and installed in concurrence with state regulations. Government representatives can use the web-based resource when monitoring the plans, design, site selection and construction of these systems.

The DEQ’s proposed updates to the TGM, which can be found on the department’s website, will impact sections related to easement, intermittent filter dosing and wetlands constructed by subsurface flow. The department is accepting public comment on the revisions until Jan. 8, which can be submitted via mail or email.
