Massport wins $333,000 grant for diesel engine replacement at Boston’s Conley Terminal

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) recently received a $333,000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to replace the engines of five rubber-tired gantry cranes with new, cleaner diesel engines at the Port of Boston’s Conley shipping terminal.

"Investing in this clean diesel project at the Conley Terminal will have long-term health and environmental benefits for the City of Boston and the surrounding area," U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) said. "This important funding will allow improvements to crane engines, which will reduce emissions, conserve fuel, and decrease air pollution, promoting a healthier environment for all. I give great credit to Tom Glynn, our Massport Director.” 

Lynch noted the high shipping volumes and record productivity at the Port of Boston. "It is even more important that we make investments to ensure this key part of the local economy is environmentally friendly,” he said.

The funding, given through the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA), will also cover the approximately 25 percent of the estimated $1.3 million needed to complete project, with Massport providing the remaining funding. Annual emission reductions driven by the project will be roughly the same as planting 3,615 trees.
