MTU and Daimler to partner on diesel engine development

MTU, a Rolls-Royce subsidiary, and Daimler have agreed to continue working together on developing and building high-speed diesel engines for commercial, industrial and agricultural uses, according to a Tuesday announcement.

“We are delighted that MTU is continuing to endorse our engines for meeting the difficult demands of its customers in the C&I and agricultural segment,” Frank Reintjes, Daimler Trucks global powertrain and manufacturing engineering division head, said. “Our products’ reliability, fuel efficiency and high quality standards have been decisive factors.”

The companies will develop MTU-branded units – Series 1000, 1100, 1300 and 1500 – that will comply with the new European Union Stage V emissions standards, which are set for a 2019 implementation date. The companies will also work together on supply contracts for industrial engines of previous emissions stages.

“By extending our existing supply contracts, we are making industrial engines for all relevant emissions stages available to our customers on a long-term basis,” Rolls-Royce Power Systems CEO Ulrich Dohle said. “At the same time, we can already unveil our solution for the new E.U. Stage V legislation. Furthermore, our customers can continue to enjoy all the benefits of high-volume standard production at Daimler.”
