The National Biodiesel Board (NBB) announced today that the California Air Resources Board has determined that biodiesel has the best carbon score among liquid fuels in terms of greenhouse gas emissions reductions.

“Biodiesel is the most sustainable fuel on the planet,” NBB Director of Sustainability Don Scott said. “Low carbon alternatives can also be low cost alternatives when we use diverse supplies of renewable resources. This validates that California’s carbon-reduction goals are obtainable.”

The Air Resources Board released its findings in its Low Carbon Fuel Standards on Sept. 25, determining that America’s Advanced Biofuel provides emissions reductions in a range of 50 to 80 percent. The analysis, which supports previous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) findings, was a thorough and rigorous undertaking.

“California’s analysis, which has been validated by independent academic review, provides confidence that biodiesel is, without question, a more sustainable alternative for transportation fuel,” Scott said. “The commercial success of the growing biodiesel industry suggests goals to further reduce greenhouse gases and displace imported petroleum are appropriate and achievable. With a focus on carbon reduction and the national policy to support it, biodiesel could reduce carbon emission by 40 million tons annually.”
