The spill occurred on Aug. 5 during EPA inspection activities at a mine just outside of Durango, Colorado, when over 3 million gallons of heavy-metal-contaminated water was inadvertently released into the Animas River. The latest sampling data is for surface-water samples taken Sept. 4-5 and Sept. 7-9, as well as sediment samples taken Sept. 5-9, all from the EPA’s Region 6.
The new documents include the agency’s interim use sampling plans, which are subject to change as priorities around sampling shift. There are also contract documents relating to the EPA’s actions at the Gold King and Red and Bonita Mines and landowner consent documents that have allowed the EPA to access the Gold King Mine site.
The agency also announced several updates to its webpages on the Gold King Mine response, including new cumulative tables to better show data and the chronological organization of released documents.
