State agency to hold public meeting on mine-fire reclamation project

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said on Thursday that it will hold a public information session on its Powderly Creek Northeast Underground Mine Fire Reclamation project, set to begin soon in Carbondale in Lackawanna County.

The project, which will be managed by Kylertown-based Earthmovers Unlimited at a bid price just shy of $9 million, will involve extensive work over roughly 108 acres. It will address an underground fire in an abandoned mine and the surrounding land, which is plagued with “highwalls” of coal refuse piled up to 130 feet high.

The public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. EDT on Sept. 23 at Carbondale City Hall, 1 North Main Street. Local residents and officials will be able to learn about the project and ask questions.
