Michigan agency unveils new database to streamline permitting process

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) announced the launch of MiWaters on Monday, an online permitting and compliance database developed with the Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB) that promises streamlined permitting throughout the state.

The database modernizes the DEQ’s operations, bringing the services and information from over 25 databases and applications under one umbrella. MiWaters will be a valuable tool for those seeking National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), storm-water groundwater discharge, aquatic nuisance control, and land and water interface permits, as well as for those seeking to report untreated or partially treated sanitary wastewater.

The database is DTMB’s first effort under its Next Generation Digital Infrastructure (NGDI) effort and keeps the state in compliance with federal electronic reporting requirements. MiWaters also will be a useful information source for the general public.

It is available on the DEQ’s website, along with tutorials to show interested parties how to correctly use the system.
