Meeting to review progress at Birmingham Superfund site

The Environmental Protection Agency announced Monday it will join the Agency for Toxic Substances Disease Registry (ATSDR) in hosting a public meeting on the progress at the 35th Avenue Superfund site in Birmingham Alabama. 

ATSDR representatives will review the a recent site report, “Evaluation of Surface Soil and Garden Produce Exposure for the 35th Avenue Superfund Site.” The report’s full text is available online, and ATSDR officials encourage meeting attendees to read the report prior to the meeting. The agency will be accepting public comments on it until Aug. 31, 2015.

The EPA will be providing an update on its activities, which consist of sampling and testing an additional 850 properties near the Superfund site for which it has issued authorization forms.

The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at the Bethel Baptist Church in Collegeville, Birmingham. Agency officials will provide attendees with an overview of their activities for the first hour, followed by an availability session.
