Texas Tech wins $374,510 STAR Grant from EPA

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded Texas Tech University a Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program grant of nearly $375,000 on Tuesday for research into the effects of chemical contaminants on the environment.

The STAR grants come through the EPA’s Chemical Safety for Sustainability (CSS) research program, and are targeted at improving chemical evaluation methods and promoting environmental sustainability. Texas Tech’s grant will go toward creating a better approach for understanding and predicting the ecological effects of chemicals on an individual and community level.

“This research will help develop innovative methods to reduce chemical impacts on the environment and people’s health,” EPA Regional Administrator Ron Curry said. “EPA’s STAR program is making these scientific advances possible.”

Texas Tech’s $374,510 grant is part of $4 million awarded to six universities in this round of STAR grants. Other winners include the University of California, Santa Barbara; Harvard University; University of North Carolina at Wilmington; Oregon State University; and Michigan State University.
