EPA registers SGS Global Softline’s Nanosilva pesticide

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued registration for SGS Global Softline’s Nanosilva (NSPW-L30SS), an antimicrobial pesticide product containing nanosilver, according to an announcement from the company released Friday.

Nanosilver, which is tiny silver particles, combats staining and long-lasting odor when embedded into plastics, fabrics and other materials. Due to its anti-bacterial properties, EPA regulations require products containing nanosilver as an active ingredient to attain registration with the agency before being sold. Nanosilva has been approved by the EPA for use as a non-food-contact preservation, fighting against bacteria, fungi, mold and mildew.

Nanosilva’s registration comes after the review of information, including exposure data and scientific literature, on the microbial pesticide. The EPA’s findings suggest that the product will does not release silver in amounts to cause adverse effects on adults, children or the environment.

Nanosilva will be used in articles like household items, electronics, sports gear, hospital equipment, bathroom fixtures accessories and textures, where it will be an antimicrobial agent, preventing the growth of odor-causing bacteria with a slow release of silver ions. This will also prevent stains and other damage.
