Mineral-processing firms settle with EPA over failure to file toxic-release reports

Two mineral-processing companies based in North Canaan, Connecticut, have settled with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over failure to file toxic-release inventory reports.

The EPA cited Specialty Minerals and Minteq International for violations of the federal Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act, which requires certain facilities to file annual toxic-release inventory reports detailing the toxic chemicals released by the company that year.

As per the settlement, the companies will pay a civil penalty of $76,500 and jointly provide $28,700 in equipment or training materials to the Canaan Fire Company and Torrington Fire Department for use in emergency response to hazardous-materials incidents.


“Failing to file toxic inventory forms deprives the community of its right to know about releases and the presence of toxic chemicals in the neighborhood,” EPA New England Regional Administrator Curt Spalding said. “EPA is pleased that in this settlement, two local communities will benefit from their local fire departments having access to specialized equipment to better protect health during emergencies.”
