Omega-3s Coalition creates scientific advisory council to increase awareness of two fatty acids

The Omega-3s Coalition, an organization of stakeholders seeking to refine knowledge of fatty acids, announced the formation of a scientific advisory council today, which will help the coalition inform the public about omega-3s eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

"Decades of research and thousands of studies support the heart-healthy benefits of EPA and DHA omega-3s, yet many consumers still don't have the information they need about the effectiveness and best sources of these important fatty acids," Executive Director of the Global Organization for EPA and DHA (GOED) Adam Ismail said. "We are excited to bring together such prominent health and nutrition professionals to help turn the tide toward greater omega-3 awareness and consumption to support overall cardiovascular health."

The coalition, which is governed by GOED, formed the council to provide an independent scientific voice on the potential cardiovascular benefits of omega-3s and to guide research looking for a connection. The council will advocate for the fatty acids to consumers and colleagues, which more than 75 percent of Americans are deficient in, according to the coalition’s release.

Council members include Cheryl Forberg, R.D.; Bill Harris, Ph.D., FAHA, FNLA; Daniel Soffer, M.D., FNLA; and Marie Spano, M.S., R.D., CSCS, CSSD.
