EPA settles with Maryland machine shop over hazardous waste violations

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it has reached a consent agreement with sheet metal and machine shop Central Precision Inc., located in Boonsboro, Maryland, and owned by LAMM Holdings Inc., over violations of hazardous waste regulations on both a state and federal level.

After an EPA inspection and information requests, the companies were cited for noncompliance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which regulates hazardous waste. According to EPA citations, the shop was improperly storing materials like rinse water filtration sludge, waste paint and paint thinners.

The EPA investigation also found violations in terms of making required hazardous waste determinations, compliance with container management requirements, compliance with personnel training requirements and compliance with contingency plan preparations, amongst others.

As per the settlement, Central Precision and LAMM do not confirm their liability for the violations, but both companies have been cooperative with the EPA to resolve the issues and bring the shop into compliance. The companies will also pay a $100,000 penalty, the amount of which reflects their efforts to work with the EPA.
