NFU voices continued support of mandatory GMO labeling on food

The National Farmers Union (NFU) last week again came out in support of mandating federal labels on food products that contain genetically modified organism traits.

The union said it opposes Rep. Mike Pompeo's (R-KS) voluntary standard that is laid out in his Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015.

“Consumers increasingly want to know more information about their food, not less,” NFU President Roger Johnson said. “NFU policy supports mandatory labeling for food products throughout the processing chain, seeking to reduce consumer confusion and allowing producers to differentiate their products.”

Johnson added the bill by Pompeo has changed since it was introduced in Congress last year.

“NFU appreciates Congressman Pompeo’s efforts to reduce consumer confusion and standardize a GMO label, but cannot support a bill that lacks mandatory labeling,” Johnson said. “We now call on Congress to bridge the numerous proposals that are currently pending for the benefit of producers and consumers.”

The NFU was established in 1902 with its main goals being to enhance and protect the quality of life and economic well-being of farmers, their families, rural communities and ranchers throughout the country by supporting “grassroots-driven”policies that are adopted by its members.
