Atlanta 3rd on EPA list of cities with most Energy Star buildings

Atlanta recently claimed the third spot on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) list of 25 American cities with the most Energy Star-certified buildings for 2014.

This is the seventh-annual list documenting the expansion of the Energy Star program, which has grown to more than 25,000 buildings since 1999, representing savings of more than $3.4 billion.

“Cities across the country are saving billions every year through partnering with our Energy Star program and increasing energy efficiency, while doing their part to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions that fuel climate change,” EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said. “This is the type of leadership we need from city leaders and building owners who are demonstrating that increasing energy efficiency strengthens local economies, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps preserve a healthy planet for future generations.”

In Atlanta, these energy savings added up to financial savings of more than $55 million and environmental savings of gas emissions equal to those of 48,700 homes.

The Energy Star program  helps the owners and managers of buildings see areas for improvement, including reducing lighting loads, making upgrades to heating and cooling equipment, and  servicing building systems.
