Ohio EPA approves wastewater permit for proposed Ashtabula Energy facility

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said Friday that it has approved a wastewater discharge permit for Ashtabula Energy’s proposed processing plant, which will give the company a wastewater discharge allowance of 1.625 million gallons into Lake Erie per day. The plant, which is planned for the east side of the EMC facility in Ashtabula, will produce diesel fuel and other substances from natural gas.

Senator: Algal-bloom forecast for Lake Erie Basin 'incredibly troubling'

U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) issued a statement on Thursday in response to scientists' predictions of heavy algal blooms in the Western Lake Erie Basin. An algal bloom is a dramatic increase in algae growth in a body of water. For Lake Erie, the organism in question is cyanobacteria, which is considered to be toxic to humans, and basin is a major source of drinking water.
