EPA recognizes two NC companies with 2016 SmartWay Excellence Awards

Two companies based in North Carolina – Lowe’s Companies Inc. and Transportation Insight LLC — recently received 2016 SmartWay Excellence Awards from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in recognition of their efforts to reduce their carbon footprints.

“EPA is honoring its top environmental performers — those SmartWay Partners that have taken significant steps towards a sustainable freight transportation energy future,” EPA Office of Transportation and Air Quality Director Christopher Grundler said. “SmartWay Excellence Award recipients have become leaders in this crucial sector of our economy by embracing the mutual benefits that efficiency brings for both operational performance and environmental results.”

The EPA recognized nine logistics companies, retailers and manufacturers in their recent awards, highlighting how the companies have contributed to improved air quality while also reducing their fuel expenditures. The SmartWay program has seen partners reduce emissions by more than 72 million metric tons and save $24.9 billion in fuel spending since 2004.

Other 2016 SmartWay Excellence Awardees include: Bacardi USA Inc., in Coral Gables, Florida; Hewlett-Packard Inc.; Johnson & Johnson, in Skillman, New Jersey; Kimberly-Clark Corp., in Knoxville, Tennessee; The Home Depot U.S.A. Inc., in Atlanta, Georgia; Union Pacific Distribution Services, in Omaha, Nebraska; and Whirlpool Corp., in Benton Harbor, Michigan.
