Rhode Island DEM organizes 1,000 tree giveaway

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is teaming up with the Arbor Day Foundation again this year to give 1,000 trees away to state residents through the Energy Saving Trees Program.

Those interested in a tree must register in advance, which is ongoing. Trees will be between four and six feet tall and all residents who receive a tree will also get planting and care instructions.

"We're happy to partner with the Arbor Day Foundation again this year to encourage homeowners to 'green' their properties and promote a healthier environment," DEM Director Janet Coit said. "Trees play an important role in cooling our streets and homes, filtering our air, and reducing stormwater pollution. I hope Rhode Islanders will take advantage of this opportunity to plant a tree with their families and watch it grow; it will help with household expenses and benefit our environment for generations to come."

When positioned and planted correctly, mature trees can save up to $30 a year on heating and cooling bills.

Trees will be available for pick up on April 16 at the public library in Westerly, April 23 at the public library in Portsmouth, May 7 at the Knight Memorial Library in Providence and May 14 at the public library in Woonsocket.
