Springerville, AZ, completes Small Community Environmental Protection Plan

Springerville, Arizona, located in Apache County, last week became the state’s third municipality to develop a Small Community Environmental Protection Plan (SCEPP), which will enable the town to provide better environmental benefits to its residents.

“Participation in the Arizona Department of Environment Quality (ADEQ) Small Communities Environmental Compliance Assistance Program exemplifies the Town of Springerville’s commitment to continual improvement and environmentally stewardship for the benefit of those we serve,” Springerville Town Manager Steve West said.

In creating a SCEPP, Springerville is now better equipped to maintain compliance with state and federal environmental regulations, reducing the potential for violations and enforcement actions. Should any penalties be incurred for future violations, the town is also eligible for a fine reduction of up to 100 percent. After the completion of its SCEPP, Springerville applied for and received recognition in the state’s Voluntary Environmental Stewardship Program.

“We are committed to helping small communities in the state affordably protect their public health and air, land and water resources,” ADEQ Director Misael Cabrera said. “We congratulate the Town of Springerville for being a leader in the effort to build environmental cooperation and hope other small towns and wastewater and water districts join the program,”
