Pittsburgh’s North Side Industrial Development Company (NSIDC) has won Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) brownfield grants, worth $400,000, to assess potentially contaminated abandoned sites in the city, moving them towards future use.

These latest grants, which will be used to assess the sites for petroleum and other hazardous substances, brings the total amount of brownfield grants given to NSIDC to $5 million. EPA Regional Administrator for the Mid-Atlantic Shawn M. Garvin announced the grants during a ceremony at Pittsburgh’s Homewood Station Senior Apartments, which stand on a former brownfield site that was assessed with EPA grants.

“This funding will help NSIDC and the city of Pittsburgh reclaim properties that have been unused for years and turn those sites into assets for the community, the environment and the economy,” Garvin said. “Brownfield initiatives demonstrate how environmental protection and economic development work hand in hand.”

NSIDC is a nonprofit that promotes economic and community development in Pittsburgh’s North Side through job creation and physical improvement, among other means. The organization’s grants are part of the more than $54.3 million the EPA has awarded so far this year.
