Ohio EPA to hold hearing on Mahoning Landfill expansion

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will discuss a draft permit for the expansion of the Mahoning Landfill during a public meeting May 7 at the Springfield Township Administration Building in New Springfield, Ohio.

The solid waste landfill in New Springfield applied to the Ohio EPA to expand both vertically and laterally. This would more than double Mahoning’s waste disposal area from 51.6 to 109.6 acres, which translates to a capacity increase of nearly 10 million cubic yards. Due to this size increase, the facility’s daily waste allowance would increase from 2,500 tons per day to 4,000.

The Ohio EPA has issued a draft permit approving the expansion, which can be reviewed online or at the agency’s Northeast District Office in Twinsburg. The public meeting is a chance for citizens to get information about the draft permit, ask questions about its contents or submit their comments for agency review before a final permit is issued.
