EPA gives fellowship grant to Louisiana Tech Student

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded Joshua Tully, a chemistry student from Louisiana Technical University, one of 34 research fellowship grants for college students across the U.S. pursuing careers in environmental science-related fields on Wednesday.

“Supporting students in fields of environmental studies provides a continuous stream of specialists that will help us meet new environmental challenges,” EPA Regional Administrator Ron Curry said. “We are proud to support some of the most promising future contributors to the environmental field.”

This grant was part of the EPA’s Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) fellowship program, which aims to give students financial support and the opportunity to work at an EPA facility with EPA scientists through an internship. The 34 grants awarded this week amount to $1.7 million given to college students going into their junior year, who can receive up to $20,700 for a year of academic support and $8,600 for summer internships.

The GRO Fellowship program was created more than 30 years ago. It aims to not only support students during their education, but to give them tools for success in their future careers, which for past fellows has included working as government researchers, engineers, university professors and high school science teachers.
